Now that you have read our comprehensive list of some of the best gas-powered washers of 2023, you may have a bunch of questions. Don’t worry because we have provided some of the answers for you in our handy buyer’s guide.
The terms PSI and GPM stand for pounds per square inch and gallons per minute, respectively. These are the two main terms used to understand the performance of a pressure washer.
Basically, a washer with a higher PSI can push cold or hot water out with more force than one with a lower PSI. And a higher GPM means more water is flowing through the washer during a set amount of time than one with a lower GPM.
Any washer with at least 2,800 PSI and a flow of 2.5 GPM or more is good for heavy-duty cleaning.
Most pressure washers use an axial pump or a triplex plunger pump.
An axial pump is a direct drive style of pump that spins at the same speed as the engine. An axial pump is often used in pressure washers because it is capable of providing tremendous pressure and performs well for many different cleaning tasks. The downside is that they typically break down faster than triplex pumps.
Triplex pumps get their name because they have three plungers. They are considered the very best in pump design for pressure washers. Triplex pumps offer fantastic performance and often last longer than axial cam pumps. Of course, a triplex pump will raise the price tag of the pressure washer.
When comparing hose sizes, the two measurements to be concerned about are length and diameter.
Comm lengths for pressure washer hoses range anywhere from 20-feet to 50-feet and what you need is dependent on how you like to work. A longer hose means you can move further away from the pressure washer without having to roll it behind, but a shorter hose weighs less and can be easier to work with.
The diameter of the hose factors is also essential to consider. Always double-check your pressure washer’s specs before buying a new hose to ensure that it is compatible.
For a pressure washer of around 2700 PSI, a 1/4-inch hose should be perfect. If your pressure washer is capable of a higher PSI of 3400 or more, consider getting a hose that is 5/16. You can also go larger and buy a 3/8-inch diameter hose if your pressure washer is near 5000 PSI.
All of the pressure washers we reviewed come with a series of nozzles. Each nozzle differs in angle and its intended use. Choosing the right nozzle tip will depend on the job.
Our final category is not actually a component found on the pressure washer, but we still like to point out its importance.
The amount of noise a pressure washer makes is something that many professionals can easily forget to consider. Most gas pressure washers produce volume levels of approximately 85 dBAs, at which point you need to think about hearing protection.
Some pressure washers come with a soap tank.
Consider how often you need to work with chemicals and whether you need an onboard soap tank. Some professionals prefer to use a downstream injector and a separate container of detergent.
