Foreword

Field service businesses in pest control, lawn care and landscaping industries face a critical financial challenge: balancing operational efficiency with evolving customer payment expectations. As these essential service providers scale operations, disjointed payment systems can create friction – delaying revenue collection, increasing administrative workload, and frustrating customers accustomed to seamless and flexible digital payment options in other areas of e-commerce and retail.

What makes this even more challenging for business adaptation is that customers also vary in how they prefer to pay, such as, using credit cards vs. checks and other methods, making payments in person vs. online, and paying per field service job vs. making recurring or subscription payments for ongoing services.

The bottom line? Unintegrated payment systems may not meet customers’ evolving demands, impacting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. What’s more, businesses that rely on outdated or fragmented payment systems may grapple with the challenges of managing payments across decentralized, mobile workforces.

As field service businesses grow, they must scale operations and automate repetitive tasks to remain efficient. However, many businesses hesitate to adopt new technology due to initial costs and uncertainty about long-term benefits.

To better understand field service businesses’ payments acceptance needs and the impact WorkWave Payments’ integrated payments solution can make on businesses, WorkWave launched a survey targeting current and prospective WorkWave Payments clients.

This report covers the research findings. The first section tracks field service businesses’ payments acceptance habits and the impact WorkWave Payments had on key business metrics. The second and third sections speak to questions businesses may have when deciding to adopt a new solution, including WorkWave Payment’s cost transparency and benefits suite.

By embracing modern payment technologies, field service businesses can meet customer expectations, while also unlocking operational efficiencies that drive long-term success.

Report insights are from a proprietary study hosted from October 2024 to November 2024 to better understand the payments acceptance habits and outlook on WorkWave Payments by current and prospect business clients. The research was run through an online survey and included 62 respondents who are either current WorkWave Payments business clients or prospect WorkWave Payments business clients who have other WorkWave solutions (50 existing clients and 12 prospect clients). To qualify for the research, respondents personally indicated that they are key decision makers in their businesses who have insight into key business metrics. Findings are directional only.

Part 1: Impact of Integrated Payments Solutions

WorkWave Payments business clients can accept payments from their customers at the jobsite, or online, across a variety of methods. For example, the top methods existing clients use to accept payments include credit cards (46%), check (27%) and debit cards (13%). WorkWave Payments also offers a variety of collections options, such as single payments and recurring or subscription payments to accommodate every job type.

When asked about satisfaction and use of WorkWave Payments, 71% of existing clients reported feeling satisfied with the solution for their business needs and 93% of businesses plan to maintain or increase how often they use the solution to accept payments in the next 6 months. WorkWave Payment’s easy setup process was one of the top reasons for user satisfaction.

To better understand the specific impact of an integrated payments solution, WorkWave also asked existing clients about the impact of WorkWave Payments on key business metrics. Surveyed businesses reported that the solution had a positive impact across key metrics, such as 85% of businesses experiencing a positive effect on operational efficiency and 68% experiencing revenue growth.

Notably, 18% of businesses reported over 50% revenue growth due to adopting WorkWave Payments and 29% reported over 30% revenue growth.

Faster payments acceptance and increased customer satisfaction were the leading causes of these positive outcomes, demonstrating how integrated solutions can be transformational for field services teams and how they interact with customers.

Part 2: WorkWave Payments Pricing Transparency

When evaluating a new payment acceptance solution to adopt, monetary and time costs are critical factors for businesses seeking to balance operational efficiency with affordability. For example, when asked about adopting any new technologies for their business, 55% of respondents felt implementation costs were the biggest barrier and 36% felt fees and ongoing costs were the biggest barrier.

It’s common for payment solutions providers to advertise a headline rate – a low, flat rate used in marketing materials – while the effective rate, which reflects the true cost after accounting for all fees and surcharges, can be dramatically different. This means solutions in market may offer fragmented or inflexible pricing structures that can include hidden fees, leaving businesses with unexpected expenses as they grow. Some effective rates can be up to 4x a solutions’ advertised headline rate, driven by add-ons like statement fees, account updater fees, chargeback markups, and more.

To address this, WorkWave Payments is designed with transparency in mind. Our headline rate is the effective rate, so businesses know what they’re paying for as they grow.

Part 3: WorkWave Payments Benefits

In addition to cost, 36% of survey respondents were concerned about unclear benefits when deciding to adopt new technology for their business. As modern payments acceptance solutions can offer more than just the ability to process transactions, the benefits can be broad and may appear complex.

WorkWave Payments aims to combine features that work across the payments journey, from sending automated invoices, to providing options on how a payment is collected, and saving cards on file for repeat business. These benefits extend beyond convenience, empowering businesses to improve cash flow, reduce administrative burdens, and foster stronger customer relationships.

Field services businesses using WorkWave Payments highlight time savings and streamlined payments collection as key outcomes of using the solution:

“[The platform] has helped with management, the accounting part, the customer service aspect, taking payments, it just really has helped our business go to the next level. Excellent.” – Thomas, Lawn Care Business

“75% of our customers are on autopay and that’s a lot more payments to be posting on a day-to-day basis. That’s a huge time savings.” – Becky, Pest Control Business

“A huge thing in our business is [installment billing]. It is literally a game changer. [For my business] it reduces cancels, increases average value of your customer and you have the ability to add on other services for customers.” – Brad, Landscaping Business

“We’re automatic bill pay so all of our customers are credit card on file and I don’t have to worry about where that credit card is being stored…. I can sleep at night because [the solution] deals with that, not me. There’s a lot of benefits and that just operates and runs the business smooth for us” – Josh, Landscaping Business

Conclusion:

Field service businesses that implement integrated payment solutions like WorkWave Payments achieve transformative results—up to 50% revenue growth, 85% improvement in operational efficiency and significantly enhanced customer satisfaction—while eliminating the hidden costs and administrative burdens of fragmented payment systems. Payment operations, once viewed as a necessary back-office function, now serve as a strategic competitive advantage driving meaningful business growth. By modernizing how they accept and process payments, pest control and green industry service providers can simultaneously meet evolving customer expectations and unlock significant operational and financial benefits that directly impact their bottom line.
